Celebrating Women's History Month at Queens' Provisions
Rotarians gathered on Thursday, March 14 at Queens' Provisions. We laughed, shared stories, ate good food and shared each other's company. Our next social networking event will be on Thursday, April 18 at 5 pm.
Flint Firebirds vs. Sarnia Sting Game to Support Local Rotary Literacy Programs
Rotarians in Flint/Genesee County and the surrounding areas are invited out to see the Flint Firebirds close out the regular season against Sarnia before beginning their playoff run on Saturday, March 23 at 7 p.m. Fans who use the promo code ROTARY will have a portion of the ticket price donated to the local Rotary literacy initiative.
Next Up: Taliah Abdullah, Director of the Gloria Coles Flint Public Library
Taliah Abdullah has been the director of the Gloria Coles Flint Public Library since July 2023. Please join us this Friday as we welcome her as the guest speaker. We will be meeting at noon on March 22 for our regular meeting.
Our beloved Amy Van der Putte will be leaving her role as Secretary at the end of this Rotary year. That means it is up to us-the members of the club- to work together to accomplish some of the things we have relied on Amy to do in the past. (We plan to still have a paid bookkeeper role.)
Some of the duties previously done by Amy will become the job of our committees. Two of the duties we are looking for specific Rotarians to help with are the Registrar and the Secretary. For more info or to express interest, please contact President Ann Marie or President Elect Ellen.
Help Wanted- Registrar
We are looking for 2-3 people who together can provide coverage at the registration table for our twice monthly regular meetings. (If we had 3 people, this would mean each person handled 8 meetings per year.) This duty can qualify for the Service Path for membership, resulting in lower dues. Duties include:
Log meeting attendance
Sign in guests
Accept payment for meals
Sell raffle tickets and prepare prize envelopes
Collect red cup cash
Transfer cash to bookkeeper
Upload meeting recordings to YouTube
Help Wanted- Board Secretary
For this position, the candidate must be either a current or former Rotary Club of Flint board member. Depending on the desire of the person, it may be a "leadership track" role or a consistent role similar to the current Board Treasurer position. Duties include:
Update membership renewal forms each year
Distribute and collect membership renewal forms
Liaise with bookkeeper on member/payment status
Maintain a current membership list in Club Runner and ensure Rotary International dues are paid
Record board minutes and handbook
Order pins, plaques, Paul Harris materials, etc.
Maintain club digital records in Dropbox
Spotlight on Polio
Paul Alexander, an attorney and author who had the distinction of being the person who spent most of his 78 years living inside an iron lung, died last week. When he contracted polio in 1952, there were 21,000 cases of paralytic polio in the United States.
Thanks to vaccines, polio is considered to be eradicated in the United States today and is close to becoming only the second illness ever to be eradicated entirely. However, getting the job done requires a concerted push. Rotary International, along with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, is leading the push.
To join the effort, please consider becoming part of the Polio Plus Society. People who join commit to donate at least $100 per year to Polio Plus until the disease is eliminated.
Each volunteer opportunity has a link to sign up online via Club Runner. If you prefer, you can also email Joe Martin.
