We Need You on August 1!

Last year, we had a volunteer service project with the Flint River Watershed Coalition (FRWC). We are currently short on volunteers and need 3-5 more Rotarians (or their friends/family) to help again. The project involves spray painting storm drains to remind people that it empties into the Flint River watershed and not to dump materials into it. Other roles include distributing door hangers to nearby homes so residents are aware of the effort.

We will meet at the Food Bank on August 1 at 9:00 am to receive some quick training and our assigned site. We will wrap up by 11:00. If you can help, please sign up today or contact Elizabeth Jordan.

The Red Cross- Responding to Disasters and Saving Lives
by Lauren Coney

Becky Gaskin, the Executive Director of the American Red Cross for the East Central Bay Chapter, was the guest speaker at the Rotary Club of Flint on July 26. She has served as Executive Director since 2022 and serves in 10 surrounding counties.

The American Red Cross was established in 1881 by Clara Barton. When most people hear “Red Cross,” they only think of disaster relief or donating blood. But the Red Cross offers much more than that. The core mission of the American Red Cross is to alleviate and prevent human suffering.

Becky also shared that Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (DEI) is very important to their mission. There is a local DEI committee, and they are seeking additional volunteers. Ninety percent of the organization is run by volunteers.

In the 1980s, the Red Cross would respond to a national disaster every three months. Presently, Michigan is a continuous response state, responding to three disasters every month.

Every day in Michigan, the Red Cross responds to house fires, the most common disaster in the nation. In the East Central Bay Chapter, most of the responses are from Genesee County. Genesee County has the highest rate of house fires out of the 10 counties Becky serves. In 2023, there was almost one fire per day within the East Central Bay Chapter, with a total of 316 fires. Over 1,000 individuals were affected, and the Red Cross provided just shy of $300,000 in financial assistance.

In 2023, the Red Cross installed over 2,400 smoke alarms in over 900 homes on the North Side of Flint. Smoke alarms are available all year long.

Every two seconds, someone in the United States needs blood. When 14,000 units of blood are donated, that saves or sustains over 14,000 lives. Blood donation saves at least one life, if not more. There is an app available that allows you to track your blood donation. Donations are always needed.

If you are interested in learning more about the American Red Cross or would like to be a volunteer, please contact Becky Gaskin at Becky.Gaskin@redcross.org or (810) 893-6647.

Understanding Implicit Bias
The human brain is an amazing and complex thing. Every moment, we taken in a massive amount of data- some of which we consciously pay attention to, and most which we do not. With exposure to different experiences and information, we form a sense of what is expected, and over time that shifts to the background of our awareness. This is really helpful in many situations (can you imagine if you were as amazed by gravity as a 9-month-old is? How would you get anything done!) but unhelpful in others. It is great that we can rely on our implicit association of gravity and objects. It is not so great to rely on implicit associations about groups of people.

And yet, as human beings with human brains, it is something we all do without being consciously aware of it. Through a lifetime of socialization and exposure to media and stereotypes, we all form implicit associations (also referred to as implicit or unconscious bias) about people. We may attach a concept or value to a group of people without even realizing it, and the speed of our unconscious thoughts can cause us to act under the influence of these implicit associations without our awareness. Moreover, these implicit associations may go against our deeply held conscious beliefs. So what is a person to do?

The first (and sometimes hardest) thing is to acknowledge that all people have implicit associations- including our own selves- and that is not a value judgement, just a byproduct of how our brains work. Denial gets in the way of taking steps that can actually help mitigate the unwanted effects of implicit associations.

Next week, we will take a look at the Implicit Association Test, a tool that was developed to help individuals see what implicit associations they hold. But first, to see a little more about implicit bias basics, check out this video produced by UCLA.
