Dayna Harper, executive director of the Community Resolution Center (CRC) presented to the Rotary Club of Flint on May 30. She shared about the variety of mediation services that the center provides. Mediation offers people who are having a conflict the opportunity to work out a solution with the help of a neutral person. Harper shared that often, people who are in the heat of a conflict have a hard time hearing each other, but a mediator can help.
The center mediates a variety of disputes, ranging from landlord/tenant to parenting time, small claims, and domestic disputes. There are also specialized mediation services, such as victim/offender, which is the only type of mediation that involves criminal matters. Many cases are referred by courts, but people can also self-refer to take advantage of the services.
Rotary Youth Leadership Academy (RYLA)
Last week's issue shared about the Rotary Youth Leadership Academy, which was held in London, Ontario in May. Our club sponsored three local high school students to attend the weekend summit that included youth from across Rotary Area 7. Joe Reynolds of the Genesee Valley club served as the liaison who accompanied local students.
Enjoy these photos that give a sense of the experience, and look forward to having some of the participants join us on June 13 to share more about their travels!

Don't you love surprises? Duncan Beagle is planning something for June 13, which means it is sure to be special. Come see who! (Or, read next week's email from President Ellen if you like spoilers.)
Welcome, New Rotarians!
On May 30, we were excited to welcome not one, not two, but three new Rotarians to the club! Please welcome Amy Anderson (sponsored by Domonique Clemons, who also happens to be her son!), Emily Clark (sponsored by Mike Chaffee), and Stuart Swan (sponsored by David Smith). We are glad to have each of you join us in a collective commitment to Service Above Self!
Happy Pride Month!
Marsha P. Johnson,
Have you ever wondered why June is Pride Month? It isn't just because June is a lovely time of year... there is a history here.
On June 28, 1969, police raided the Stonewall Inn, a gay bar in New York City. For years leading up to it, police had harassed gay and transgender people, arresting them at Stonewall and other places. While there had been activists working to advance LGBT rights for some time, on that day their efforts reached a new level. When the police came, rather than filing out to be arrested, patrons fought back. For the next several evenings, tensions flared. The first Pride March was held the following June to commemorate the Stonewall Uprising.
Marsha P. Johnson, a trans woman, was an activist and is credited with being one of the leaders of the Stonewall Uprising.
