For several years, the Rotary Club of Flint had a policy of basing our weather-related closure decisions on what the Flint Community Schools did- if they closed, we canceled. Last month, the club's board of directors decided to change this policy.
Moving forward, on days when the weather is "iffy," the President will make the call about whether or not to hold a
club meeting. They will announce any closure by 9:00 am the day of our meeting based on conditions at that time and the expected conditions through the early afternoon. This will be conveyed through email. We will also try to have cancelations shared through ABC 12.
There are several reasons for this change. Among them, school districts have to make the call about whether to cancel school very early in the morning. More than once, road conditions that were worrisome at 5:00 am were fine by noon.
March Birthdays
Happy birthday to all our Rotarians born in March!
Happy Easter!
For Christians, Easter (and its preceding weeks) is the holiest time of the year. It is a time of sacrifice and rebirth.
Upcoming Solar Eclipse
Flint will be treated to a celestial show on Monday, April 8. On that day, a solar eclipse- where the moon passes directly in front of the sun- will cover a large swath of the United States. Those of us in Flint will see a partial eclipse, where much but not all of the sun will be obscured. To see "totality," you would need to travel to the southeast to the Toledo or Cleveland area.
Looking at the sun during a partial eclipse without proper protective eyewear is dangerous- do not do it! Special solar eclipse glasses or filters for telescopes are needed to view it safely. Longway Planetarium will be hosting a viewing party.
Mass Transportation Authority executive director Ed Benning will be our first guest speaker for the new month. He will join us on April 12 at noon at the Food Bank. You may recall the fabulous presentation Ed gave at the District Conference in June. Come hear about the terrific work MTA is doing to bring access and clean fuels to Genesee County's transit system.
April Social Networking
Our next social networking event will be at Totem Books on April 18 from 5-7 pm. We will have some board and card games available. Some folks will bring a bottle of wine to share- if you would like to bring something too, you are welcome to. Totem Books is located across from the White Horse on Court St.
Toddle Time Volunteering
Most Fridays, the Gloria Coles Flint Public Library will be hosting Toddle Time. Rotarians are asked to pitch in to help set up, help the librarian as they lead the interactive caregiver/child songs and games, and clean up. The timeframe is 9:30-11:30 am. You can sign up to volunteer by contacting Joe Martin, Amy Krug, or Gerri Lajewski.
