November 1-2 is el Día de los Muertos (the day of the dead), which originated in Mexico as a way of honoring loved ones who have died. Altars called ofrendas feature photos of the loved ones along with colorful displays and favorite food and drink.
Locally, a community celebration will take place at the Flint Institute of Arts from 4-7 pm on Friday, November 6. Activities include calavera (skull face painting) and a community ofrenda that participants are welcome to add to. There is no cost, but registration is encouraged.
