This past weekend we witnessed history as Rich Strike won the Kentucky Derby as the second longest odds horse to ever win the race. As an 80 to 1 underdog, the horse quickly moved from the outside position to the inside rail and passed the other horses down the home stretch of the race. From not being in the race until the day before contest, the horse won it’s only race on horse racing’s biggest stage.
There is an parallel to Rotary service in the story of Rich Strike. Rotarians invest our time, talent and treasure in causes and people who are the underdogs of life. We support literacy and education around the world, immunize those in distant lands from disease and bring fresh drinking water, a sustainable environment and peace to the world. In short, we look for the underdog and bet on the best of humanity.
A $1 bet that correctly guessed the top four finishers in Kentucky Derby, would have won about $325,000. Almost as good of a return is the tremendous good and goodwill that we generate at home and around the globe by investing in Rotary!
Our speaker this Friday is The Honorable Jennie E. Barkey, presiding Probate Court Judge for Genesee County. Judge Barkey will speak to us regarding mental health issues and the mental health court. You don't want to miss this important message.
